3M™ VHB™ Flame Retardant Tape 5958FR | 1.0 mm Black Acrylic Foam Tape

Overview

3M™ VHB™ Flame Retardant Tape 5958FR is a black, 1.0 mm thick, double-sided acrylic foam tape designed for high-strength permanent bonding and flame-retardant applications. It uses a modified acrylic adhesive on both sides and a highly conformable acrylic foam core, providing strong adhesion to metals, glass, plastics, painted surfaces, and many powder-coated substrates. The viscoelastic acrylic foam construction helps absorb vibration and accommodate differential movement between bonded materials. Why Choose 3M™ VHB™ 5958FR?

Flame-retardant VHB technology

Combines VHB high-strength bonding with flame-retardant performance.

Strong and conformable

The acrylic foam core provides both structural bonding capability and surface conformity.

Excellent substrate compatibility

Designed for adhesion to metals, glass, plastics, paints, and many powder-coated surfaces.

Reduces mechanical fastening

Can potentially replace rivets, screws, welding, and other mechanical fastening methods in suitable designs.

Sealing capability

The acrylic foam construction can create a durable seal against moisture and water when properly applied.

Suitable for lightweight designs

Enables bonding of thinner, lighter, and dissimilar materials compared with some traditional fastening methods.

Installation Guide

1. Prepare the surface

Clean most substrates using a 70/30 mixture of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and water before application.

For heavily contaminated surfaces, additional cleaning or surface preparation may be required.

2. Improve adhesion when necessary

For difficult substrates:

  • Light abrasion can increase surface area.
  • Adhesion promoters may improve adhesion to certain plastics and paints.
  • Porous surfaces should generally be sealed.
  • Special preparation may be required for glass, copper, rubber containing migrating components, and other unusual substrates.

3. Apply the tape

Apply the tape to one clean substrate and press firmly to establish good contact.

Avoid touching the adhesive surface after removing the liner.

4. Join the substrates

Remove the liner and carefully position the second substrate.

Apply sufficient pressure across the bonded area to achieve good contact.

5. Allow sufficient dwell time

3M performance data is commonly measured after a 72-hour dwell time at 23°C. Actual bonding performance depends on substrate, pressure, temperature, surface preparation, and application design.

Storage

Store 3M™ VHB™ Tape 5958FR in its original packaging under controlled conditions.

Recommended practice:

  • Keep in a clean and dry environment.
  • Protect from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid excessive heat and humidity.
  • Keep the tape protected from contamination.
  • Store flat where practical.
  • Keep the adhesive surface covered until application.
  • Follow the latest 3M product documentation for specific shelf-life and storage requirements.
