Why Choose 3M 1182 Copper Foil Tape?
3M 1182 combines a copper foil backing with electrically conductive adhesive on both sides. Unlike single-sided conductive copper foil tapes, its double-sided construction is designed to connect two surfaces physically and electrically, making it suitable for selected grounding, bonding, and shielding applications.
Its removable liner supports precision converting and die-cutting. Yousan can assist with tape sourcing, custom slitting, and precision die-cut components according to your required dimensions and application conditions.
Installation Guide
-
Prepare the surfaces: Remove dust, oil, moisture, and other contaminants from the bonding areas.
-
Check the application: Confirm that both surfaces are suitable for conductive adhesive bonding.
-
Cut to size: Use the required roll width or a precision die-cut shape.
-
Remove the liner: Expose the adhesive immediately before application.
-
Apply evenly: Position the tape and press firmly to establish intimate contact with both surfaces.
-
Inspect the bond: Check for wrinkles, gaps, trapped air, or loose edges.
-
Verify performance: Measure electrical continuity, contact resistance, and shielding performance where required.
Follow the current 3M product documentation and the requirements of the finished assembly.
Storage
Store the tape in its original packaging in a humidity-controlled environment at approximately 10–27°C, with relative humidity below 75%. Protect it from direct sunlight, moisture, excessive heat, dust, and chemical contamination.
The 3M June 2021 data sheet specifies a five-year shelf life from the date of manufacture when stored under the stated conditions. Confirm the current TDS and lot documentation for the supplied product.
FAQ
1. What is 3M 1182 copper foil tape used for?
It is used for EMI/RFI shielding, electrical grounding, conductive bonding, static charge draining, and electronic prototyping.
2. Is 3M 1182 a double-sided tape?
Yes. It has electrically conductive acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive on both sides of the copper foil backing.
3. Is the adhesive electrically conductive?
Yes. The conductive adhesive is designed to provide electrical contact between the bonded substrates and the copper foil backing.
4. What is the difference between 3M 1181 and 3M 1182?
3M 1181 has conductive adhesive on one side of its copper foil backing, while 3M 1182 has conductive adhesive on both sides. Choose according to whether one or both sides need to form an adhesive electrical connection.
5. Can 3M 1182 be die-cut?
Yes. Its release liner supports handling and conversion into custom shapes and components.
6. What is the thickness of 3M 1182?
The June 2021 TDS specifies a nominal copper foil thickness of 0.036 mm and a total tape thickness of 0.089 ± 0.013 mm, excluding the liner.
7. What shielding effectiveness does 3M 1182 provide?
The June 2021 TDS reports an average of 54 dB over 300 kHz–2.5 GHz under its specified test method. Actual performance depends on installation, contact quality, substrate, and frequency.
