Benefits
High-Temperature Bonding
3M™ VHB™ Tape 4611 is designed for applications requiring elevated temperature resistance. It can withstand temperatures up to 149°C (300°F) for long-term use and up to 232°C (450°F) for short-term applications, under the conditions defined by 3M testing.
Strong, Long-Term Bonding
The acrylic foam construction provides high-strength bonding and long-term durability while allowing the tape to accommodate different materials and assembly designs.
Alternative to Mechanical Fasteners
The tape can help replace rivets, screws, welds, and other mechanical fastening methods, reducing drilling, welding, grinding, refinishing, and associated cleanup operations.
Smooth Appearance
The thin, dark gray foam construction provides a smooth and virtually invisible fastening method compared with conventional mechanical fasteners.
Sealing Capability
The closed-cell acrylic foam construction helps create a tight seal against water and moisture while providing structural attachment.

Why Choose 3M™ VHB™ Tape 4611?
High-Temperature Performance
Designed for demanding bonding processes involving elevated temperatures, including applications before high-temperature paint processing.
Strong Metal Bonding
The general-purpose acrylic adhesive provides strong adhesion to many high surface energy metal substrates.
Firm Acrylic Foam
The firm foam construction combines bonding strength with the ability to accommodate different materials and assembly configurations.
Permanent Bonding
Provides a fast, convenient alternative to mechanical fastening methods and liquid adhesives.
Improved Production Efficiency
By replacing drilling, welding, grinding, and finishing operations in suitable applications, VHB™ Tape can help simplify assembly processes.
Clean Appearance
The thin foam construction creates a smooth and virtually invisible fastening solution.
Installation Guide
1. Surface Preparation
Clean the bonding surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, oil, grease, dust, and other contaminants.
For many substrates, 3M recommends cleaning with a 70/30 mixture of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and water. Heavy oils or oxidation may require additional cleaning or surface preparation.
2. Prepare the Tape
Cut the tape to the required length or shape.
Avoid touching the adhesive surface after removing the liner.
3. Apply the Tape
Apply the tape to one prepared surface and press firmly to establish good contact.
4. Assemble the Parts
Remove the release liner and carefully position the second substrate.
Avoid repositioning once the surfaces have made contact whenever possible.
5. Apply Pressure
Apply sufficient pressure across the entire bonded area to ensure intimate contact between the adhesive and substrate.
6. Allow Adhesion to Develop
3M’s typical performance data are based on a 72-hour dwell time at 23°C (73°F). Actual bond development depends on the application conditions.
Important: For high-temperature paint or powder-coating processes, the complete assembly should be validated under the customer’s actual temperature profile, substrate, coating system, dwell time, and loading conditions.
Storage
Store 3M™ VHB™ Tape 4611 in its original packaging in a clean and dry environment.
Avoid excessive heat, direct sunlight, moisture, and contamination.
For the latest storage conditions and shelf-life requirements, refer to the applicable 3M product documentation and packaging information.
FAQ
Q1: What is 3M™ VHB™ Tape 4611?
3M™ VHB™ Tape 4611 is a dark gray, 1.1 mm double-sided acrylic foam tape with a firm acrylic foam core and general-purpose acrylic adhesive on both sides.
Q2: Is 3M 4611 suitable for high-temperature applications?
Yes. 3M specifies a long-term temperature resistance of up to 149°C (300°F) and short-term resistance of up to 232°C (450°F) under defined test conditions.
Q3: Can 3M 4611 be used before powder coating?
Yes. The 4611 family is specifically positioned for applications involving pre-powder-coat assembly and high-temperature paint processing. The actual process should be validated before production.
Q4: Can 3M 4611 replace screws or rivets?
In suitable applications, yes. The tape is designed as an alternative to mechanical fasteners such as rivets, screws, and welds, depending on the required load, substrate, environment, and joint design.
Q5: What materials can 3M 4611 bond?
It is particularly suitable for high surface energy materials such as metals, glass, and easier-to-bond painted surfaces. Certain plastics and coated surfaces may also be suitable after appropriate surface preparation.
Q6: What is the thickness of 3M 4611?
The nominal total tape thickness is 1.1 mm (45 mil / 0.045 in), with a typical thickness tolerance of ±10%.
Q7: What color is 3M 4611?
The standard product is dark gray.
Q8: Is 3M 4611 waterproof?
The closed-cell acrylic foam construction helps create a tight seal against water and moisture. Actual sealing performance depends on joint design, substrate, application, and environmental conditions.
Q9: Does 3M 4611 require curing?
No liquid adhesive curing process is required. The pressure-sensitive adhesive provides immediate handling strength after application, while final bond performance develops over time.
Q10: Can 3M 4611 be die-cut?
Yes. 3M VHB™ Tapes can be converted into custom shapes and sizes through the 3M converter network. Custom die-cut solutions can be considered for industrial assembly applications.
