Why Choose 3M™ VHB™ 5958FR?
Flame-retardant VHB technology
Combines VHB high-strength bonding with flame-retardant performance.
Strong and conformable
The acrylic foam core provides both structural bonding capability and surface conformity.
Excellent substrate compatibility
Designed for adhesion to metals, glass, plastics, paints, and many powder-coated surfaces.
Reduces mechanical fastening
Can potentially replace rivets, screws, welding, and other mechanical fastening methods in suitable designs.
Sealing capability
The acrylic foam construction can create a durable seal against moisture and water when properly applied.
Suitable for lightweight designs
Enables bonding of thinner, lighter, and dissimilar materials compared with some traditional fastening methods.
Installation Guide
1. Prepare the surface
Clean most substrates using a 70/30 mixture of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and water before application.
For heavily contaminated surfaces, additional cleaning or surface preparation may be required.
2. Improve adhesion when necessary
For difficult substrates:
- Light abrasion can increase surface area.
- Adhesion promoters may improve adhesion to certain plastics and paints.
- Porous surfaces should generally be sealed.
- Special preparation may be required for glass, copper, rubber containing migrating components, and other unusual substrates.
3. Apply the tape
Apply the tape to one clean substrate and press firmly to establish good contact.
Avoid touching the adhesive surface after removing the liner.
4. Join the substrates
Remove the liner and carefully position the second substrate.
Apply sufficient pressure across the bonded area to achieve good contact.
5. Allow sufficient dwell time
3M performance data is commonly measured after a 72-hour dwell time at 23°C. Actual bonding performance depends on substrate, pressure, temperature, surface preparation, and application design.
Storage
Store 3M™ VHB™ Tape 5958FR in its original packaging under controlled conditions.
Recommended practice:
- Keep in a clean and dry environment.
- Protect from direct sunlight.
- Avoid excessive heat and humidity.
- Keep the tape protected from contamination.
- Store flat where practical.
- Keep the adhesive surface covered until application.
- Follow the latest 3M product documentation for specific shelf-life and storage requirements.
FAQ
What is 3M™ VHB™ 5958FR?
3M™ VHB™ 5958FR is a black, 1.0 mm thick, double-sided acrylic foam tape with modified acrylic adhesive and flame-retardant performance.
Is 5958FR double-sided?
Yes. 5958FR has modified acrylic adhesive on both sides of a conformable acrylic foam core.
What thickness is 3M 5958FR?
The total tape thickness is 1.0 mm (40 mil) with a typical tolerance of ±10%.
What color is 5958FR?
5958FR is black and uses a red printed PE film liner.
Is 5958FR flame retardant?
Yes. 3M specifies that 5958FR meets the FAR 25.853(a) 12-second vertical burn test. It also has documented smoke and toxicity testing characteristics.
Is 5958FR UL94 V-0?
Do not automatically describe 5958FR as UL94 V-0. The 3M TDS cited here specifies FAR 25.853 and other flammability/smoke/toxicity tests rather than presenting UL94 V-0 as the product’s primary flame-retardant claim.
What is the temperature resistance of 5958FR?
The typical short-term temperature resistance is 149°C (300°F), while long-term temperature resistance is 93°C (200°F) under the conditions specified by 3M.
Can 5958FR bond powder-coated surfaces?
Yes. 5958FR is designed to bond to many painted and powder-coated surfaces, provided the substrate is properly prepared and compatible.
Can 5958FR replace screws or rivets?
In suitable applications, yes. 3M describes 5958FR as an alternative to mechanical fasteners such as rivets, screws, and welding, as well as liquid adhesives. Final design validation is required.
Is 5958FR suitable for outdoor applications?
Yes. 3M describes 5958FR as offering indoor and outdoor durability. The actual service environment should be evaluated for the specific application.
Can 5958FR be die-cut?
Yes. 3M VHB tapes are available in converted shapes and sizes through the 3M Converter network. Industrial converters can produce custom widths, shapes, and die-cut components.
