Why Choose 3M™ CIP66?
3M™ CIP66 offers a practical combination of PE foam cushioning, acrylic adhesive, good initial tack and water resistance for light-duty mounting applications.
Unlike high-performance structural acrylic foam tapes designed for demanding load-bearing assemblies, CIP66 is better positioned as a general-purpose mounting, cushioning, sealing and non-structural attachment tape.
Its approximately 1 mm foam construction also makes it suitable for converting and die-cutting into custom adhesive shapes, which can simplify assembly for OEM and industrial customers.
For lightweight mounting applications where quick tack, cushioning and a clean adhesive attachment are more important than structural load capacity, CIP66 can provide a cost-effective tape solution.
Installation Guide
1. Prepare the Surface
Clean both bonding surfaces thoroughly.
Remove dust, oil, grease, moisture, release agents and other contaminants that may reduce adhesion.
2. Check the Substrate
Confirm that the substrate is compatible with acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive.
For difficult or low-surface-energy materials, additional surface treatment or an adhesion promoter may be required.
3. Cut the Tape
For converted applications, die-cut CIP66 into the required shape and size.
Ensure the adhesive surface remains clean during converting and handling.
4. Apply the Tape
Apply the tape to one clean surface without stretching the foam carrier.
Press the tape firmly against the substrate to maximize contact.
5. Remove the Liner
Remove the release liner carefully without touching or contaminating the exposed adhesive.
6. Assemble the Components
Position the second component accurately and press it firmly into place.
7. Apply Uniform Pressure
Apply uniform pressure across the entire bond area.
Good adhesive contact is particularly important when bonding smooth but slightly uneven surfaces.
8. Allow Adhesion to Build
Allow sufficient time for the acrylic adhesive to develop its final bond strength before applying significant loads.
CIP66 should be used within its intended light-duty, non-structural application range.
Storage
Store 3M™ CIP66 in its original packaging in a clean and dry environment.
Protect the tape from:
- Excessive heat
- Direct sunlight
- Moisture
- Dust and contamination
- Extreme temperature fluctuations
Keep the adhesive surface protected until the tape is ready for application.
For exact shelf-life and recommended storage conditions, refer to the latest 3M technical documentation and the specific product packaging.
FAQ
What is 3M™ CIP66?
3M™ CIP66 is a white, double-sided PE foam tape with acrylic adhesive. It is designed primarily for light-duty mounting, cushioning, sealing and non-structural attachment applications.
What is the thickness of 3M CIP66?
The 3M China product page describes CIP66 as approximately 0.04 inch (1 mm) thick. A 3M application catalog lists approximately 1.1 mm, so the exact thickness should be verified against the specific product specification before publishing a fixed tolerance value.
What material is CIP66 made from?
CIP66 uses a polyethylene (PE) foam carrier with acrylic adhesive coated on both sides.
Is 3M CIP66 double-sided?
Yes. CIP66 is a double-coated foam tape with acrylic adhesive on both sides.
What color is CIP66?
CIP66 is white according to 3M’s official China product information.
Is CIP66 waterproof?
3M describes CIP66 as water resistant and suitable for applications requiring water-resistant attachment.
Is CIP66 suitable for outdoor applications?
CIP66 has water-resistant characteristics and resistance to high and low temperatures, but suitability for a specific outdoor application depends on exposure conditions, temperature, UV exposure, substrate and required service life. Application testing is recommended for long-term outdoor use.
Is CIP66 suitable for heavy-duty bonding?
CIP66 is primarily intended for light-duty, non-structural attachment. It should not automatically be selected for heavy structural bonding or high-load applications.
Can CIP66 be used for hooks?
Yes. 3M specifically describes CIP66 as commonly used for hook foam applications.
Can CIP66 be die-cut?
Yes. 3M identifies CIP66 as a commonly used material for die-cutting and custom converting.
Can CIP66 be used for LED light strips?
Yes. 3M has specifically promoted CIP66 for attaching smart LED lighting strips and similar light-duty lighting components.
What materials can CIP66 bond?
CIP66 can be considered for suitable metal, plastic, glass, ceramic and other smooth surfaces. The actual bond depends on substrate surface energy, cleanliness, texture and environmental conditions.
Is CIP66 a VHB tape?
CIP66 should not be marketed simply as a VHB structural tape. 3M’s official product name is 3M™ Polyethylene Foam Tape CIP66, and 3M positions it for light-duty, non-structural attachment rather than treating it as a universal structural VHB solution.
Can CIP66 replace screws or mechanical fasteners?
For suitable lightweight, non-structural applications, CIP66 can provide an alternative mounting method. However, it should not be considered a universal replacement for screws, rivets or mechanical fasteners.
