Installation Guide
- Clean bonding surfaces with isopropyl alcohol.
- Ensure surfaces are dry and free of dust, grease, or oil.
- Apply the tape using firm, even pressure.
- Avoid repositioning after initial contact.
- Approximately 50% bond strength develops after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours, and 100% after 72 hours at room temperature.
- Validate adhesion through production testing before mass production.
Storage
Store the tape in its original packaging.
Recommended storage conditions:
- Temperature: 16°C–27°C (60°F–80°F)
- Relative Humidity: 40%–60%
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Store in a cool, dry environment.
- Store rolls horizontally whenever possible.
- Follow FIFO (First-In, First-Out) inventory management.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is 3M™ VHB™ 4956 used for?
It is designed for permanent structural bonding in transportation, electronics, appliances, construction, signage, and general industrial manufacturing.
How thick is 3M™ VHB™ 4956?
The tape has a nominal thickness of 1.6 mm (62 mil).
What materials can it bond?
It bonds aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel, glass, acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS, composites, painted metals, and many medium- and high-surface-energy materials.
Can 4956 replace rivets and screws?
Yes. It is specifically designed to replace many mechanical fasteners and liquid adhesives while improving appearance and simplifying assembly.
Is it suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. The tape offers excellent resistance to UV radiation, moisture, weathering, and temperature extremes.
What is the difference between 4956 and 4950?
Both belong to the 4941 Family and have the same 1.6 mm thickness. 4956 uses a conformable acrylic foam core, allowing better bonding on slightly uneven surfaces, while 4950 uses a firm acrylic foam core for higher rigidity and dimensional stability.
Can it be die-cut?
Yes. Guangdong Yousan provides precision slitting, laminating, die-cutting, rewinding, kiss-cutting, and OEM converting services.
Is 4956 certified?
Yes. 3M™ VHB™ 4956 is UL GREENGUARD® and UL GREENGUARD Gold certified, supporting low-emission indoor applications.
