Why Choose
3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1100 combines a viscoelastic acrylic foam core with high-performance acrylic adhesives to provide a reliable alternative to conventional mechanical fastening in suitable automotive attachment applications.
Its 1.14 mm construction offers a balance between conformability, bonding performance and appearance. The tape is particularly suitable for automotive exterior components where the adhesive must accommodate different substrates, curved surfaces and mechanical stresses.
For manufacturers and component suppliers looking for automotive-grade double-sided acrylic foam tape, PT1100 provides a specialized solution for exterior trim and component attachment.
Installation Guide
1. Clean the surfaces
Remove dust, oil, grease, release agents and other contaminants from the bonding surfaces.
2. Prepare the substrates
Make sure the surfaces are clean and dry. For plastic components or difficult substrates, an appropriate surface treatment or adhesion promoter may be required.
3. Apply the tape
Apply PT1100 to the first substrate while avoiding unnecessary contact with the adhesive surface.
4. Apply uniform pressure
Press the tape firmly and evenly across the entire bonding area to establish good contact.
5. Remove the liner
Carefully remove the protective liner without contaminating the exposed adhesive.
6. Assemble the components
Position the second substrate accurately and apply firm, uniform pressure.
7. Allow sufficient bonding time
Adhesion develops progressively after application. Avoid applying excessive loads immediately after assembly.
8. Validate the application
For critical automotive or dynamic-load applications, validate the tape under the actual substrate, temperature, vibration and environmental conditions.
Storage
- Store in the original packaging.
- Keep the product clean and dry.
- Protect from direct sunlight.
- Avoid excessive heat and humidity.
- Keep the adhesive surface free from contamination.
- Do not remove the liner until the tape is ready for application.
- Follow the applicable 3M product documentation for product-specific storage recommendations.
FAQ
Q1: What is 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1100?
A: PT1100 is a 1.14 mm thick double-sided acrylic foam tape designed primarily for automotive attachment and exterior trim applications.
Q2: What is the thickness of PT1100?
A: The nominal thickness is 1.14 mm (0.045 in), with a stated tolerance of ±0.13 mm.
Q3: What type of adhesive does PT1100 use?
A: PT1100 uses two different high-performance acrylic adhesive systems, identified as VR1 and VR2, for the two sides of the tape.
Q4: Can PT1100 bond automotive paint?
A: Yes. The product is designed for bonding to various automotive paint systems, including traditional and certain scratch-/mar-resistant paint systems.
Q5: Can PT1100 be used on plastic?
A: Yes, PT1100 is designed for suitable primed plastic applications. Plastic substrate preparation and an adhesion promoter may be required depending on the material and application.
Q6: Is PT1100 suitable for automotive exterior applications?
A: Yes. Automotive exterior trim and component attachment are key application areas for PT1100.
Q7: Can PT1100 be used for vibration applications?
A: The viscoelastic acrylic foam core provides stress-relaxation characteristics that can be beneficial in applications involving mechanical stress and vibration. Actual suitability should be validated under the specific application conditions.
Q8: Can PT1100 replace screws or mechanical fasteners?
A: In suitable applications, acrylic foam tape can provide an alternative to mechanical fastening. However, the required bonding area, substrate, load direction and environmental conditions must be evaluated before replacing mechanical fasteners.
Q9: Can PT1100 support a 25 kg load?
A: A universal 25 kg load rating should not be assigned to the tape. Load capacity depends on bonding area, substrate, surface preparation, temperature, load direction, duration and vibration. Application-specific testing is recommended.
Q10: What is the difference between PT1100 and PT1500?
A: The primary difference is nominal thickness. PT1100 is approximately 1.14 mm, while PT1500 is approximately 1.52 mm. Product selection should be based on the required bond-line thickness, substrate geometry and application conditions.
Q11: Is PT1100 a VHB™ tape?
A: PT1100 is part of the 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT Series. It uses an acrylic foam construction similar in principle to high-performance acrylic foam attachment tapes, but its product designation is Acrylic Plus Tape PT1100.
