Why Choose 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1500?
3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1500 combines a 1.52 mm acrylic foam core with two different high-performance acrylic adhesive systems.
The VR1 side is designed for adhesion to metal and plastic parts, while the VR2 side provides high initial and final adhesion to scratch- and mar-resistant automotive paint systems. This dual-adhesive construction makes PT1500 particularly useful for automotive assemblies involving different substrate types.
Its viscoelastic acrylic foam core provides conformability and stress relaxation, making the tape suitable for exterior trim components with curved or irregular geometries.
Installation Guide
1. Surface Preparation
Clean the bonding surfaces thoroughly. Remove dust, oil, grease, release agents and other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
The surface should be clean and dry before tape application.
2. Check Substrate Compatibility
Identify the materials being bonded and confirm that PT1500 is appropriate for the specific automotive paint, plastic or metal substrate.
For difficult plastic substrates, additional surface preparation or adhesion-promoter treatment may be necessary.
3. Apply the Tape
Apply PT1500 evenly to the prepared substrate.
Avoid stretching the tape during application, particularly around corners and curved areas.
4. Apply Pressure
Apply firm, uniform pressure across the bonded area to maximize adhesive contact and wet-out.
5. Remove the Liner
Carefully remove the protective liner without contaminating the exposed adhesive surface.
6. Assemble Components
Position the mating component accurately and bring it into contact with the exposed adhesive.
Avoid repositioning after full contact whenever possible.
7. Apply Final Pressure
Apply uniform pressure to the entire bond area to promote intimate contact.
8. Allow Adhesion to Build
Allow sufficient time for adhesive build before subjecting the assembly to significant loads.
3M notes that peel and shear performance depends on substrate characteristics and/or paint composition, so actual application testing is recommended.
Storage
Store 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1500 in its original packaging in a clean and dry environment.
According to the current 3M PT Series Technical Data Sheet:

FAQ
What is 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1500?
3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1500 is a 1.52 mm double-coated acrylic foam tape designed primarily for automotive exterior trim and component attachment.
What is the thickness of PT1500?
PT1500 has a nominal thickness of 1.52 mm (0.060 in) with a tolerance of ±0.13 mm (±0.005 in).
Is PT1500 a double-sided tape?
Yes. PT1500 is a double-coated acrylic foam tape with different acrylic adhesive systems on the two sides.
What adhesive does PT1500 use?
The PT Series uses:
- VR1: Non-liner side, high-performance acrylic adhesive for excellent adhesion to metal and plastic parts.
- VR2: Liner side, high-performance acrylic adhesive with very high initial and final adhesion to scratch- and mar-resistant paint systems.
What color is PT1500?
PT1500 is dark gray.
What is PT1500 mainly used for?
Typical applications include automotive body side moldings, roof ditch moldings, spoilers and other exterior trim components.
Can PT1500 bond automotive paint?
Yes. The VR2 adhesive side is specifically designed for high initial and final adhesion to scratch- and mar-resistant automotive paint systems.
Can PT1500 bond plastic?
Yes, the VR1 adhesive is designed to provide excellent adhesion to plastic parts. However, specific plastic substrates should be tested because surface characteristics can significantly affect adhesion.
Can PT1500 be used on curved surfaces?
Yes. Its acrylic foam construction provides conformability for contoured automotive components.
Is PT1500 suitable for exterior automotive applications?
Yes. PT1500 is designed for automotive exterior attachment applications such as body side moldings, roof ditch moldings and spoilers.
What is the difference between PT1500 and PT1500T?
Both are 1.52 mm PT Series products with the same basic VR1/VR2 adhesive construction. The key difference is the liner configuration. PT1500T is the T-liner version, while PT1500 is the standard version. The PT Series TDS identifies the T-Liner Version as a clear, single-side siliconized liner with a secondary liner for level-wound rolls.
Is PT1500 a VHB tape?
PT1500 is officially named 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1500. For accurate product identification, it is better to use the official product name rather than labeling it generically as “3M VHB Tape PT1500.”
Can PT1500 replace mechanical fasteners?
PT1500 can be used as an attachment method for suitable automotive trim applications, but whether it can replace mechanical fastening depends on bond area, substrate, load direction, temperature, vibration, environmental exposure and assembly design. Application-specific testing is required.
Does PT1500 have a universal load rating?
No. 3M does not provide a universal “kg load rating” applicable to every installation. Actual peel and shear performance depends on factors including substrate and paint composition.
