Why Choose 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1100T?
PT1100T combines a highly conformable acrylic foam core with two adhesive systems engineered for different automotive bonding surfaces. This makes it particularly suitable when a project requires reliable attachment to automotive paint, metal or primed plastic while maintaining an attractive bond line.
Its viscoelastic core provides stress relaxation under load, while the T-liner construction offers additional manufacturing flexibility for tabbing and automated tape application processes.
Installation Guide
1. Prepare the Surface
Clean the bonding surfaces and make sure they are dry, free from dust, oil, grease, release agents and other contaminants.
2. Check Substrate Compatibility
Confirm that the selected adhesive side is appropriate for the substrate. For plastic components, an adhesion promoter may be required depending on the plastic type and surface condition.
3. Apply the Tape
Apply PT1100T to the designated bonding surface while avoiding stretching the tape during application.
4. Apply Pressure
Apply sufficient and uniform pressure across the bonded area to promote adhesive contact and wet-out.
5. Remove the Liner
Remove the appropriate liner immediately before mating the second component.
6. Assemble the Parts
Position the components accurately and apply firm, uniform pressure over the entire bonding area.
7. Allow Adhesion to Build
Adhesion generally increases with time. Avoid applying excessive loads before sufficient adhesive build has occurred.
For production applications, surface preparation, pressure, temperature, dwell time and bond geometry should be validated for the specific automotive assembly.
Storage
Store 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1100T in its original packaging in a clean and dry environment.
Recommended storage conditions should follow the latest applicable 3M technical documentation and product packaging. Protect the tape from contamination, excessive heat, moisture and direct environmental exposure before use.
For long-term storage, always refer to the latest 3M product documentation for specific shelf-life and storage requirements.
FAQ
What is 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape PT1100T?
PT1100T is a 1.14 mm double-coated acrylic foam tape designed primarily for automotive exterior trim and component attachment.
What is the thickness of PT1100T?
The nominal thickness is 1.14 mm (0.045 in), with a tolerance of ±0.13 mm (±0.005 in).
Is PT1100T a double-sided tape?
Yes. PT1100T is a double-coated acrylic foam tape with different adhesive systems on each side.
What is the difference between PT1100 and PT1100T?
Both products use the PT1100 adhesive/core construction. The PT1100T version includes a clear T-liner in addition to the branded liner, providing additional liner and tabbing options for manufacturing processes.
What materials can PT1100T bond?
The product is designed for automotive substrates including automotive paint systems, metal and primed plastic parts. Plastic substrates may require an adhesion promoter depending on the application.
Can PT1100T be used on curved surfaces?
Yes. Its highly conformable acrylic foam core is designed to improve wet-out and conform to complex contours.
Can PT1100T be used for automotive exterior trim?
Yes. Automotive exterior trim attachment is one of the primary target applications for the PT Series.
Is PT1100T suitable for plastic?
Yes, but the specific plastic must be evaluated. 3M notes that an adhesion promoter may be recommended for tape-to-part adhesion on plastic substrates.
Can PT1100T replace mechanical fasteners?
It can potentially reduce or replace mechanical fastening in suitable bonding applications, but this should not be treated as a universal replacement. Bond area, substrate, load direction, temperature, environmental exposure and application design must be evaluated.
Is PT1100T suitable for high-load applications?
PT1100T provides stress relaxation and robust automotive attachment performance, but 3M does not specify a universal “kg load rating.” Application-specific testing and engineering validation are required for load-bearing applications.
