Installation Guide
-
Surface Preparation: Clean and dry both bonding surfaces. Remove dust, oil, grease, and other contaminants.
-
Tape Cutting: Cut the tape to the required dimensions.
-
First-Surface Application: Apply the tape evenly to the first substrate.
-
Liner Removal: Remove the release liner carefully without touching or contaminating the exposed adhesive.
-
Bonding: Align the second substrate and bring it into contact with the adhesive.
-
Pressure Application: Apply firm, uniform pressure to maximize adhesive-to-surface contact.
-
Bond Development: Allow sufficient time for the adhesive bond to develop before applying heavy loads.
For most pressure-sensitive adhesives, initial application below 10°C is generally not recommended. Follow the applicable 3M application guidelines.
Storage
-
Store in the original packaging.
-
Recommended storage conditions: approximately 21°C (70°F) and 50% relative humidity.
-
Keep away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
-
Protect from moisture, dust, and contamination.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperature fluctuations.
-
Recommended shelf life: 24 months from the date of manufacture under the specified storage conditions.
FAQ
1. What type of adhesive does 3M 9690 use?
3M 9690 uses 3M High Strength Acrylic Adhesive 300MP on both sides of a polyester film carrier.
2. What is the total thickness of 3M 9690?
The total tape thickness is approximately 0.14 mm (5.5 mil), excluding the release liner.
3. What carrier material does 3M 9690 use?
It uses a clear polyester (PET) film carrier with a thickness of approximately 0.013 mm (0.5 mil).
4. Is 3M 9690 suitable for foam bonding?
Yes. It is suitable for foam lamination and bonding applications involving various foam materials.
5. Can 3M 9690 bond plastic materials?
Yes. Its 300MP acrylic adhesive provides good adhesion to many plastic substrates, including ABS, polycarbonate, and polyester.
6. Is 3M 9690 suitable for die-cutting?
Yes. Its thin PET carrier provides dimensional stability and improved handling, making it suitable for precision slitting, laminating, and die-cutting.
7. What is the temperature resistance of 3M 9690?
Available legacy 3M 9690 documentation lists up to 149°C (300°F) for short-term exposure and 93°C (200°F) for long-term exposure. Actual performance depends on application conditions.
8. What is the difference between 3M 9690 and 9690B?
3M 9690 features a clear PET carrier, while 3M 9690B uses a black PET carrier. The black carrier provides opacity for applications requiring a dark adhesive construction.
9. What is the difference between 3M 9690 and 9690+?
The classic 9690 uses 3M 300MP acrylic adhesive, while the newer 9690+ uses 300MP+ adhesive formulated for low-fog characteristics. Their specifications should be evaluated separately.
