Benefits
Heat Reflection and Thermal Management
The aluminum foil backing provides excellent reflection of heat and light. Because aluminum is thermally conductive, the tape can also help dissipate heat across the taped surface and reduce localized hot spots in suitable applications.
Moisture and Vapor Barrier
3M™ 425 has a very low moisture vapor transmission rate, making it useful for selected moisture and vapor barrier sealing applications. The current technical data sheet lists a typical water vapor transmission rate of 0.77 g/m²/24 h.
Excellent Conformability
The dead-soft aluminum foil can conform to curved, uneven and irregular surfaces, making the tape useful for equipment, insulation and masking applications where rigid foil materials are difficult to apply.
Chemical Masking
The tape is a candidate for selected chemical masking, chemical milling, de-painting and aluminum electroplating applications. Actual compatibility depends on the chemical concentration, temperature and exposure time.
Durable Outdoor Performance
The acrylic adhesive and aluminum backing provide resistance to moisture, weathering and UV exposure, supporting long-term indoor and outdoor applications within the specified temperature range.
Flame Resistance
3M™ Aluminum Foil Tape 425 is recognized under applicable UL flammability standards, including UL 746C and UL 723 Class “L” low-flammability rating. It is also identified as meeting requirements associated with FAR 25.853(a).

Installation Guide
1. Prepare the Surface
Apply the tape to a clean and dry surface. Remove dust, oil, grease and other contamination before application.
3M recommends applying the tape at temperatures above 0°C / 32°F for best results.
2. Position the Tape
Align the tape with the required sealing, masking, heat-reflection or thermal-management area.
3. Apply Without Excessive Stretching
Avoid unnecessary stretching of the aluminum foil during installation, particularly around corners and irregular surfaces.
4. Apply Firm Pressure
Use firm, uniform pressure to establish intimate contact between the acrylic adhesive and the substrate.
5. Overlap or Seal Joints as Required
For moisture or vapor-barrier applications, the joint design and overlap should be validated according to the system requirements.
6. Inspect the Finished Application
Check for wrinkles, lifted edges, gaps and incomplete contact before placing the assembly into service.
For chemical masking or electroplating, validate the complete tape/substrate/process combination before production.
