Benefits
Ultra-Thin Structural Bond
The 0.30 mm profile is ideal for electronic devices, display assemblies, and precision industrial applications requiring a minimal bond line.
Permanent Fastener Replacement
Replaces rivets, screws, spot welds, and liquid adhesives while creating a clean, invisible appearance.
Excellent Conformability
The viscoelastic acrylic foam conforms to slight surface irregularities and compensates for thermal expansion differences between bonded materials.
Broad Material Compatibility
Provides excellent adhesion to aluminum, stainless steel, glass, painted metals, composites, ABS, acrylic, polycarbonate, and many engineering plastics.
Long-Term Environmental Resistance
Maintains reliable performance under UV exposure, moisture, humidity, chemicals, and outdoor weathering.
Waterproof Sealing
The closed-cell acrylic foam creates a durable seal against water, dust, and contaminants.

Installation Guide
- Clean bonding surfaces using isopropyl alcohol (IPA).
- Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from grease or dust.
- Apply firm, uniform pressure across the tape.
- Avoid repositioning after initial contact.
- Approximately 50% bond strength develops after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours, and 100% after 72 hours at room temperature.
- Conduct application testing before mass production.
Storage
Store the tape in its original packaging.
Recommended storage conditions:
- Temperature: 16°C–27°C (60°F–80°F)
- Relative Humidity: 40%–60%
- Store in a cool, dry environment.
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Store rolls horizontally whenever possible.
- Shelf life: 24 months under recommended storage conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is 3M™ VHB™ 5909 used for?
It is used for ultra-thin structural bonding in electronics, display assemblies, automotive components, appliance manufacturing, signage, and industrial equipment.
How thick is 3M™ VHB™ 5909?
The nominal thickness is 0.30 mm (12 mil).
What materials can it bond?
It bonds aluminum, stainless steel, glass, composites, painted metals, ABS, acrylic, polycarbonate, PVC, and many engineering plastics.
Can 5909 replace rivets and screws?
Yes. It is engineered to replace many mechanical fasteners while improving appearance, reducing weight, and simplifying manufacturing.
Is it suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. It provides excellent resistance to UV radiation, weathering, moisture, chemicals, and temperature cycling.
What is the difference between 5908 and 5909?
Both belong to the 3M™ VHB™ 5952 Family and use the same modified acrylic adhesive.
- 5908: 0.25 mm (10 mil)
- 5909: 0.30 mm (12 mil)
5909 offers greater gap-filling capability and higher overall bond strength while maintaining a thin profile.
Can 5909 be die-cut?
